I often see people who are trying to make money online looking for a get rich quick solution, with the thought that more money will make them happy, then see them tend to give up or burnout faster. In order for you to truly be happy it may help to know how to self-actualize. What does this mean? Basically it is recognizing what makes you happy, content, and at peace with the world as a whole. Before you get turned off to the idea, realize I'm not talking the hippie, karmic, or extraterrestrial version of mediating in a cave somewhere. I'm talking about being in any endeavor, any career, or any life and realizing happiness. Now, as simple as that sounds a lot of people struggle each and every day with truly being happy, however, a few steps can surely help people get going in the right direction. In navigating the ups and downs of online business, I have developed a few steps that help keep me successful by using self-actualization.

1. The first step for you to take in order to self-actualize is to figure out who you really are. Again, I'm not asking you to spending time in a dank and musty cave, unless that works for you. But a lot of people spend so much time doing things that they don't like to do because they want to fit in or because their friends do those things. As easy as it is to just fit in, the risk is that it takes you further aware from who you really are, essentially further from happiness. You know the saying, if your friends jumped off a bridge, would you? I did! I came to find out I was a bit of an adrenaline junkie, which I had never recognized. So in that instance it worked for me. However, when I started my career, I became extremely successful, in a suit every day, sitting in meetings just for the sake of having a meeting, doing what I could to fit in. I paid more in taxes my most successful year then I had made in income my first 3 years after college! But in all of that fitting in I wasn't serving my true self. Being my own boss gives me the edge I was looking for, even with all of the challenges, it makes me happy. That being said, people should truly think about what they like, what they don't like, and start getting rid of the negatives in life and bring in more of the positives. If you need to, head to your nearest cave!
2. This step may be a little more difficult then you might expect. You need to make a daily effort to be honest with yourself. This is more than waking up in the morning looking in the bathroom mirror and thinking, "I look tired today." It's not about making sure you tell your friends the truth, which in itself is a good habit. For us human beings, it's really easy to alter a situation and look at it differently in order to make it seem better than it is, but that often accomplishes very little in personal growth and happiness. It's important to be honest and take responsibility for not only any wrongdoings but to acknowledge when what we are doing makes us unhappy. It's not that we would be living a life full of lies. But when you are able to be honest with yourself in any situation, you're living to your full potential.
3. While this doesn't need to be a final step, as there are many ways to self-actualize, my third step is to totally commit to the experience of something. To be fully absorbed in the experience itself. The speed of change in society and technology makes it easy to be noncommittal or get distracted nowadays. By fully committing to the experience at hand, you can let your true self emerge. Focus on shutting out external distractions as to how you should be thinking or feeling in the moment. Focus on accomplishment and participation. Be in the moment! Sometimes that means turning off everything that pulls you out of the experience; cell phones, PDA's, etc.

Let's do a quick recap; define who you are, be honest with yourself, and commit to the present experience. In the end, these three steps are great steps to take for those who are trying to achieve self-actualization. Though it may be challenging to follow these steps at times, a little bit of hard work and determination is all it'll take. This simple steps can help give you the edge for your online business to succeed!
